What you need to know about Tramadol

Tramadol is an opioid analgesic that also inhibits reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine, reducing pain transmission in the nervous system.

Moderate to moderately severe pain when other analgesics are inadequate.

Immediate‑release tablets/capsules every 4–6 hours as needed, or modified‑release tablets/capsules usually every 12 or 24 hours. Swallow whole with water.

Immediate‑release: 50–100 mg every 4–6 hours as needed (maximum 400 mg/day). Modified‑release: 100–200 mg once or twice daily, as directed. Use the lowest effective dose.

Nausea, vomiting, constipation, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, dry mouth, sweating. Serious: seizures, serotonin syndrome, breathing problems, allergic reactions, dependence and withdrawal.

Do not drive or cycle if drowsy, dizzy, or otherwise impaired. It is illegal to drive if you are impaired, even with a prescription.

Seizures (especially with high doses or interacting drugs), serotonin syndrome (with SSRIs/SNRIs/MAOIs/triptans/St John’s wort), respiratory depression, dependence, and overdose.

MAOIs (and for 14 days after stopping), SSRIs/SNRIs/TCAs and triptans (serotonin syndrome risk), other opioids or sedatives (additive CNS depression), and medicines that lower seizure threshold.
